Chapter 7

“I got the shrimp you asked for,” I said to Amy as I set the ice chest on the counter. “And your costume for tonight is laid out across my backseat. It looks like you’re planning to be a chef.”

She smiled and nodded. “Not just any chef… a deranged serial killer chef. Basically, it’s one of my old uniforms from culinary school that I no longer wear, and I plan to drizzle red dye down the front to look like blood. I’m going to tease my hair to give it that ‘girl gone crazy’ look, and I have a rubber chopping knife I bought from the Halloween shop when I was in town earlier in the week. It’s not overly creative, but the whole thing cost me less than ten bucks, and it works. How about you? Did you spend a lot of time on your costume?”

“Nope. I’m wearing an old uniform I still have from a club where I used to work. It seems we both went the inexpensive and easy route this year. Before I forget to ask, did Hadley ever ask you about purchasing spices in bulk?”

“No. Why do you ask?”

“When I stopped at the bakery, the woman who helped me mentioned that when Hadley had gone in to pick up a bread order, she asked about the vendor she used to buy her spices. I guess she was interested in buying spices in bulk. The woman pointed out that many spices are used in spells, and after hearing about the body in the coffin, she wondered if Hadley might have planned to use the spices for that purpose.”

Amy stopped what she was doing and looked at me. “I suppose that might be why she asked about a supplier. When I was in culinary school, we actually had a lesson about nuts, spices, and other food items that are often used for holistic purposes. As you can imagine, there are many items that work well with holistic medicine, but we also discussed the use of food items for supernatural purposes. You’d be surprised how many Wiccan spells call for cinnamon or allspice rather than toadstools or eye of newt.”

“Enchantra said that Hadley had mentioned having bad dreams about an epic battle between a witch and a witch hunter. Maybe she wanted ingredients to do some sort of protection spell.”

She shrugged. “I suppose that might be what she was doing. I still don’t know how all of this leads to a man showing up dead in one of our props.”

“Yeah, that is odd.”

“I was chatting with Cambria earlier, and she suggested that we might want to try to figure out what the symbol on the roof stands for. She pointed out that if we knew what sort of ritual was being carried out, it might give us more information that could be used to track the killer down. I called and spoke to Dawson about it, and he’s going to see if he can figure it out. He’ll be in at three o’clock, so I’m hoping he’ll have news for us once he gets here.
